The Highscore Update

Octet hits another milestone in its development cycle. Today’s update introduces a revamped Score (XML Dialog) package, new episodes, and a very special announcements.

New Score

Octet used to ship with a fairly placeholder-ish NPC Dialog set, which in theory was meant to teach server operators how to use the new features, but in practice explained almost nothing.
Starting now, a brand new dialog set based on the original service is bundled with every Octet release. It’s fully integrated with the Episode system, so dialogs will change depending on your progress.

Oh, and once you finish an episode, go ahead and ask various NPCs for help, because you’ll receive rewards for completing Quests from them!

The current Score is available in English and Japanese, with ~700 dialogs per language, and plenty of room to grow further.
None of this would’ve been possible if one of the Yogurting players hadn’t catalogued the game’s official dialogs while the official servers were still running. That’s why I want to thank a person named “peke” for this insane amount of work. His work covers all sorts of content, from regular dialogs to quests and even episodes. Peke, if you’re reading this, you’re a legend! (and please join our Discord, I have so many questions).
If you’re curious about the scale of peke’s work, check out his website (archived).
The new default Score will keep evolving with new content and ongoing refactors, making server development easier, more accessible, and more fun.

New Episodes

This update introduces 10 new episodes, and I have to admit, developing them was a genuinely pleasant experience.

Octet Public Server

Last update, I announced that an Octet-based server would launch as the main place to play Yogurting and try out new Octet features. Today, Kalimba World is going online. I want this server to be a place where players can relive their memories and meet new people with similar interests and vibes.
It’s no different because it uses the same Score described above, but the public server also provides website registration and account recovery.
I'll be happy to see you there. Have fun!

One more thing

DecodedFinn and I are very committed to client translation work. The first CLT translations are already out (you probably have them if you downloaded the new setup from Downloads). I’m also happy to announce that the Bitmap translation mission was a success! This was made possible thanks to Octet Discord member 4qki, who tirelessly translated all the bitmaps from Japanese to English. Please give him a huge shoutout!
Along with further CLT translations and improvements, I’d like to ship the first English bitmaps this year. (Not a guarantee, but it’s definitely a plan.)
Oh, and speaking of DecodedFinn, he’s developed a new Yogurting Launcher that handles game patches, translations, and the server list all in one place. Make sure to check it out and let us know what you think after trying it.
