Yogurting's 21st anniversary

Twenty-one years ago, the first students walked through the gates of Estiva and Sowol Academies. Since then, the game has been actively conquering the hearts of people around the world with its freshness, charm and style. Today, we have the greatest opportunity than ever to pause the fast-flying time and make those memories come true once again. So, let’s celebrate another anniversary of the game together with a new update to the server emulator project, followed by lots of exciting news!

First, let's hit it big: Clubs!

The long-awaited moment has finally arrived. Players can once again create a club, invite friends, and enjoy spending time together!
The current implementation still has a few limitations, but it’s solid enough to certainly spark something wonderful in the server’s social layer!

Next in line: Estiva Tutorial Episode

Thanks to an incredible breakthrough in cracking one of the game’s internet packets, many episodes have become able to be recreated in Octet. One of them, available today, is Estiva’s tutorial.
Mocha will walk you through the basics of the game and teach you how to enjoy school life to the fullest!

Deathmatch changes

Deathmatch mode has been updated to make the game more enjoyable. There are new health potions available, as well as a brand-new mechanic called System Breach! After defeating a soso and picking up this puppy, you have a chance to see your enemies’ movements on the minimap.
Use this in combination with other buffs to carefully plan an attack on an unsuspecting player!

For developers

There’s a lot of new things working behind the scenes in the new Octet version. Below you will find information that will help you get familiar with the new features:

SQLite support

This update introduces SQLite support along other DBMS schema changes. Get the newest Octet Migration Tool (OMT) in case you want to transfer data from a Quartet server.

Clubs

Here’s an example XML script to add Club dialogs to NPC China at field SF001002:

Two short announcements

Diko Ko, Yogurting’s lead developer, has published an incredible blog post about the game and its history.

He dives deep into Yogurting’s development and explores how the game’s 3D models and animations work, reverse engineering old assets and systems with a lot of details. Seeing someone who originally worked on the game revisit it with that much passion after all these years is genuinely surreal.

He also mentioned that someone had created a partially working Java server with functioning social systems… which turned out to be this project, Octet.

It’s a huge honor to even be acknowledged there. Part of me is frustrated that I couldn’t deliver some of Octet’s biggest improvements before this happened, but at the same time, seeing Yogurting still remembered and explored like this means a lot. Things like this just make me want to raise the bar even higher.

If you’re interested in the technical side of Yogurting, old development stories, or just preserving pieces of online game history, I highly recommend reading it:

Octet Public Server

I am pleased to announce that work has officially begun on a public Octet server.

The goal is not only to make Yogurting easily accessible again, but also to create a fully multilingual experience from the ground up.

The server will become the default score (XML Scripts) included with future Octet releases, serving as both an somewhat official experience and a foundation for custom content.

It’s being designed with modifiability in mind, so that anyone even slightly interested will be able to build upon it, create their own worlds, open them to other players, and continue bringing the spirit of the game back to life.

This is something I’ve wanted to do for a very long time, and I hope it can become a place where both old and new players can create new memories together.

Thanks

I’d like to say a big thank you to DecodedFinn, Dorothy, and BigSoso for their help in implementing the clubs and making quite a few improvements to the server. I’m happy to be working with both people who played this back in the day and a fresh wave of folks, a group I’m part of myself.

Happy birthday, Yogurting! 🎂
